“Epidemic of Choice – A DEA Story,” by Don Nelson, a former Embassy Marine Security Guard in Madrid, Spain, and a retired DEA Agent, is a Suspense/Thriller recently published by Amazon Kindle e-books, now available for down loading.
When Jake Shaunessey got his transfer orders to the Minneapolis office, he was all smiles. His years as a Special Agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration in San Diego had been grueling. His adrenalin glands were tired of pumping. His head was tired of the San Diego defense lawyers and their long lines of clients. Minnesota sounded great. Jake welcomed the break. His wife shared his attitude. But later, Jake and his wife get slapped with a new realization about the good life in Minnesota.
Drug kingpins and their minions secretly established their networks. The entire state…flooded with heroin. The violent crime rate…sky rocketed. ERs and morgues…crammed with heroin lovers. Bullets are flying. Innocent bystanders…killed on the streets, and even in their own back yards. No one feels safe.
The media catches the scent and reacts with a vengeance. With the heat on, the DEA sits squarely on the hot seat. The boss gives Jake a directive: Put your expertise to work. Clean up this mess. Take the damned heat off. OR ELSE!
A very tall order, indeed. Huge challenges confront Jake and his team. He plunges headlong into the case. At first some promise: Numerous leads come quickly. But the disappointments come just as fast. Violence, havoc, or corpses confront the agents at every turn. At the same time, serious problems, both in the office and at home, plague his life. Jake knows any one of them could shoot down the heroin investigation. If that happens, the Land-of-10,000-Lakes, as Minnesota is known, will become a murky cesspool, filled with tragic headlines and dead bodies.
Finally: a break. Jake probes deep into the bowels of the heroin ring. More blood spills.
But this time it’s his.
Author, Don Nelson served four years in the Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968. After his separation from the Corps, and earning his BA degree from the University of Minnesota, he was offered a position as a Special Agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration, where he served until his retirement. During his event-filled 21 year DEA career, he was awarded five commendations. At one point the DEA purchased his home and relocated him and his family with urgency after agents uncovered a sinister plot by an organized group of drug traffickers to have him murdered.
Following his retirement, his wife was awarded a commendation for her unwavering support of her husband and the DEA mission.
